Pandemic Complete Guide: Cooperative Board Game
Pandemic is a cooperative board game where 2-4 players work together as a team of disease control specialists to cure 4 deadly diseases threatening the world. Unlike competitive games, everyone wins or loses together. Designed by Matt Leacock, it has sold over 5 million copies and is considered one of the greatest cooperative games ever made.
Game Components
What's in the Box
- 1 game board showing a world map with 48 connected cities
- 7 role cards (each with a unique special ability)
- 48 infection cards (city cards with disease colors)
- 59 player cards (city cards + event cards + epidemic cards)
- 96 disease cubes (24 each in 4 colors)
- 6 research stations
- 4 cure markers + 1 outbreak marker + 1 infection rate marker
- Designed for 2-4 players (best with 3-4)
- Typical game duration 45-60 minutes
How to Play
Setup
- Place the board in the center — it shows 48 cities connected by lines.
- Each player chooses a role card and takes the matching pawn.
- Place pawns in Atlanta (CDC headquarters).
- Shuffle the infection deck and flip cards to place initial disease cubes:
- 3 cubes each on 3 cities
- 2 cubes each on 3 more cities
- 1 cube each on 3 more cities
- Shuffle the player deck — insert epidemic cards based on difficulty (4 = easy, 5 = medium, 6 = hard).
- Deal starting player cards (4 for 2 players, 3 for 3 players, 2 for 4 players).
The 7 Roles
| Role | Special Ability |
|---|---|
| Dispatcher | Move other players' pawns on your turn |
| Medic | Remove all cubes of one color in a city (not just one) |
| Operations Expert | Build a research station in any city (no card needed) |
| Quarantine Specialist | Prevents outbreaks in her city and all connected cities |
| Researcher | Can share any city card (not just the city you are in) |
| Scientist | Needs only 4 cards (not 5) to discover a cure |
| Contingency Planner | Can pick up and reuse a discarded event card |
Taking a Turn
Each player gets 4 actions per turn from these options:
Movement Actions
- Drive/Ferry: Move to an adjacent connected city.
- Direct Flight: Discard a city card to fly to that city.
- Charter Flight: Discard the card matching your current city to fly anywhere.
- Shuttle Flight: If at a research station, fly to any other research station.
Other Actions
- Build a Research Station: Discard the card matching your current city.
- Treat Disease: Remove one disease cube from your current city.
- Share Knowledge: Give or take a city card from another player in the same city (must match that city).
- Discover a Cure: At a research station, discard 5 cards of the same color to cure that disease.
After Actions: Draw Cards
- Draw 2 player cards from the player deck.
- If you draw a city card, add it to your hand.
- If you draw an event card, add it to your hand (play anytime).
- If you draw an epidemic card, resolve it immediately (see below).
- If your hand exceeds 7 cards, you must discard down to 7.
After Drawing: Infect Cities
- Draw infection cards equal to the current infection rate (starts at 2, increases over time).
- Place 1 disease cube of the matching color on each drawn city.
- If a city already has 3 cubes of that color, an outbreak occurs instead.
Epidemic Cards
When an epidemic card is drawn:
- Increase the infection rate marker (2 → 2 → 2 → 3 → 3 → 4).
- Infect: Draw the bottom card of the infection deck and place 3 cubes on that city (causing outbreaks if needed).
- Intensify: Shuffle the infection discard pile and place it on top of the infection deck.
Winning and Losing
Win Condition
Discover cures for all 4 diseases. You do not need to eradicate them — just discover all 4 cures.
Lose Conditions
- Outbreak chain: The outbreak marker reaches 8 (too many outbreaks).
- Cube shortage: You need to place disease cubes but the supply is empty.
- Card shortage: You need to draw player cards but the deck is empty.
Strategy Tips
1. Prioritize Cures Over Treatment
- The only way to win is discovering all 4 cures.
- Do not spend all your actions treating disease — focus on collecting cards and getting to research stations.
- The Scientist role (4 cards for cure) is incredibly powerful — protect them.
2. Research Stations are Critical
- Build research stations in strategically central cities (like Istanbul, Cairo, or Bangkok).
- More stations mean easier movement via shuttle flights.
- The Operations Expert can build stations without spending city cards — use them aggressively.
3. Manage Outbreak Chains
- An outbreak in a city with 3 adjacent infected cities can trigger a devastating chain reaction.
- The Quarantine Specialist is essential for blocking chain outbreaks — place her in hotspot regions.
- Treat cubes in cities that are at risk of outbreaking before the infection phase.
4. Card Sharing Efficiency
- Plan who will cure which color early in the game.
- The Researcher can pass any card to anyone in the same city — use this to accelerate cures.
- Use event cards like "Airlift" to move players into position for card trades.
5. Anticipate Epidemics
- Epidemics are predictable — count how many player cards have been drawn since the last epidemic.
- Before an epidemic hits, treat cubes in cities that might be drawn from the bottom of the deck.
- After an epidemic, the infection discard pile goes back on top — you know exactly which cities will be infected next.
