Wingspan Complete Guide: Engine Building Bird Game
Wingspan is an award-winning engine building board game where players collect bird cards and build a wildlife preserve across 3 habitats (forest, grassland, wetland). With each bird providing unique abilities, players create powerful combinations that generate increasing resources and points. Designed by Elizabeth Hargrave, it won the Kennerspiel des Jahres in 2019 and has sold over 1 million copies.
Game Components
What's in the Box
- 170 unique bird cards (each featuring a real bird species)
- 26 bonus cards
- 75 egg miniatures (in player colors)
- 5 custom dice (for the birdfeeder)
- 1 birdfeeder dice tower
- 1 goal board + goal tiles
- 103 food tokens (5 types: rodents, fish, fruit, seeds, invertebrates)
- 4 player mats (habitat boards)
- Designed for 1-5 players (best with 2-4)
- Typical game duration 40-70 minutes
How to Play
Setup
- Each player receives a player mat showing 3 habitats (forest, grassland, wetland) with 5 columns each.
- Deal 5 bird cards and 2 bonus cards to each player. Keep up to 5 birds (discard others) and keep 1 bonus card.
- For each bird kept, place 1 food token back in the supply (so keeping 5 birds costs 4 food).
- Place the birdfeeder in the center with 5 dice in it.
- Reveal 4 round goals (one per round) on the goal board.
Taking a Turn
Choose one of 4 actions:
1. Play a Bird Card
- Place a bird card in the leftmost empty column of one of your 3 habitats.
- Pay the bird's food cost and egg cost (if required by column position).
- Column 1: just food cost. Columns 2-5: food cost + increasing egg cost.
- Resolve any "when played" abilities on the bird card.
2. Gain Food (Forest Habitat)
- Activate all brown powers on your forest birds from left to right.
- Then gain food from the birdfeeder:
- Column 1: Gain 1 die from birdfeeder.
- Column 2: Gain 1 die, then optionally reroll all dice in birdfeeder.
- Columns 3-5: Gain 1 additional die per column filled.
3. Lay Eggs (Grassland Habitat)
- Activate all brown powers on your grassland birds.
- Then lay eggs on your birds:
- Column 1: Lay 2 eggs.
- Column 2-5: Lay 1 additional egg per column filled.
- Each bird has an egg capacity — cannot exceed it.
4. Draw Bird Cards (Wetland Habitat)
- Activate all brown powers on your wetland birds.
- Then draw cards from the bird tray or deck:
- Column 1: Draw 1 card.
- Column 2-5: Draw 1 additional card per column filled.
- The bird tray has 3 face-up birds — replenish after drawing.
Bird Card Powers
| Color | Type | When Activated |
|---|---|---|
| Brown | Activated | Every time you use that habitat row |
| Pink | Bonus | Once between turns (specific trigger) |
| White | When Played | Only when the bird is first placed |
| Teal | No ability | No power — usually high point value |
Round Goals
Each of the 4 rounds has a goal (e.g., "most birds in forest," "most eggs laid," "birds with wingspan under 30cm"). The player who achieves the most scores bonus points:
| Place | 1st | 2nd |
|---|---|---|
| Points | Round goal value | Half (rounded down) |
Game End
After 4 rounds, calculate final scores:
| Category | Scoring |
|---|---|
| Bird cards | Points printed on each bird |
| Bonus cards | Points from your chosen bonus card |
| End-of-round goals | Points from 4 round goals |
| Eggs | 1 point per egg |
| Food on birds | 1 point per cached food |
| Tucked cards | 1 point per tucked card |
Strategy Tips
1. Build Your Engine Early
- Forest birds that generate extra food are the foundation.
- Grassland birds that lay extra eggs create compounding value.
- Wetland birds that draw cards give you more options.
- Invest in brown power birds in rounds 1-2 for maximum returns.
2. Bonus Card Alignment
- Choose a bonus card that matches your strategy rather than forcing a strategy to match the bonus.
- Bonus cards worth 5+ points often require specific bird types — check if those birds are available.
- Some bonus cards are easy (e.g., "birds in one habitat") while others are hard (e.g., "5 birds with specific nests").
3. Habitat Balance vs. Focus
- Balanced approach: A few birds in each habitat gives flexibility.
- Focused approach: Concentrating in 1-2 habitats maximizes brown power chains.
- The focused approach often scores higher but risks missing round goals.
4. Egg Economy
- Eggs are worth 1 point each at endgame — never underestimate them.
- Birds that cache food or tuck cards create additional points.
- Lay eggs on birds with high capacity to store more value.
5. Card Selection
- Not all 170 birds are equally powerful — learn to identify engine-building birds.
- Birds that give extra actions or resources per turn are more valuable than high-point birds.
- A bird scoring 4 points but giving +1 food per forest activation pays for itself quickly.
