Dice Games Complete Guide: From Yahtzee to Craps and Beyond
Dice are humanity's oldest gaming tools. From ancient Mesopotamian bone dice to modern polyhedral sets, dice games span casual family fun to high-stakes casino play. This guide covers the most popular dice games, their rules, strategies, and the probability behind every roll.
Why Dice Games Endure
Dice games have survived for 5,000+ years because they offer:
- Universal accessibility — anyone can roll dice
- Pure probability — the math is clear and calculable
- Social excitement — group reactions to dramatic rolls
- Minimal equipment — just dice and a score sheet
Classic Dice Games
Yahtzee
Players: 2+ | Dice: 5 | Time: 30 min
Roll five dice up to three times per turn to achieve scoring combinations. The ultimate goal: Yahtzee — all five dice showing the same number (worth 50 points).
Key strategies:
- Upper section first — Fill Ones through Sixes early to earn the 35-point bonus (need 63 points total)
- Go for Yahtzee — The 50-point Yahtzee bonus is worth more than any single combination
- Joker rules — If you roll a Yahtzee but already filled the Yahtzee box, you score a "joker" bonus of 100 points

Bunco
Players: 12+ | Dice: 3 | Time: 60–90 min
A social dice game played in large groups, typically 12 players at three tables of four. Each round targets a number (Round 1 = Ones, Round 2 = Twos, etc.). Rolling three of the target number is a Bunco (21 points).
Bunco is less about strategy and more about socializing — it's played at parties, fundraisers, and community events worldwide.

Farkle
Players: 2+ | Dice: 6 | Time: 20–30 min
Roll six dice, set aside scoring dice, and decide: bank your points or risk rolling the remaining dice. If a roll produces no scoring dice, you "Farkle" and lose all accumulated points that turn.
Key strategies:
- Always keep three-of-a-kind — Worth 3× the number × 100 (e.g., three 4s = 1,000 points)
- Don't risk 1s and 5s on the first roll unless you have 3+ dice remaining
- The "hot dice" rule — If all 6 dice score, pick them all up and keep rolling

Liar's Dice
Players: 2–6 | Dice: 5 per player | Time: 15–30 min
Each player rolls dice under a cup, sees only their own dice, then bids on the total number of dice showing a particular face across all cups. Players can raise the bid or challenge (call "liar"). The loser of a challenge removes a die.
Key strategies:
- Calculate expected counts — If 6 players have 5 dice each (30 dice total), expect ~5 of each number
- Play your odds — Bid based on what you see in your cup plus statistical expectations
- Aggressive challenges — Against cautious players, challenge more often; they may be underbidding

Casino Dice Games
Craps
Players: Multiple | Dice: 2 | House Edge: 1.41% (Pass Line)
Craps is the most exciting casino dice game. The shooter rolls two dice:
- Come-out roll: 7 or 11 = Pass Line wins; 2, 3, or 12 = Pass Line loses ("craps")
- Point established: Any other number (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10) becomes the "point." Shooter keeps rolling until they hit the point (Pass wins) or roll a 7 (Pass loses)
Best bets:
| Bet | House Edge | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pass Line | 1.41% | Best basic bet |
| Don't Pass | 1.36% | Slightly better odds, but socially unpopular |
| Odds (behind Pass) | 0.00% | The only fair bet in the casino |
| Field | 5.56% | Avoid |
| Big 6/8 | 9.09% | Never bet this |
Strategy: Always take maximum odds behind your Pass Line bet — it's the only casino bet with zero house edge.
Sic Bo
Players: Multiple | Dice: 3 | House Edge: 2.78%–16.2%
An ancient Chinese dice game where you bet on the outcome of three dice. Popular in Macau and Asian casinos worldwide.
Best bets:
- Small/Big (total 4–10 or 11–17): 2.78% house edge
- Specific triple: High payout (180:1) but 16.2% house edge — avoid
- Specific double: 7.4% house edge — moderate

Bau Cua Tom Ca
Players: Multiple | Dice: 3 (with animal faces) | Origin: Vietnam
Vietnam's beloved gambling dice game features six animals: fish, prawn, crab, rooster, gourd, and stag. Players bet on which animals will appear on the three dice.

Dice Probability Fundamentals
Understanding probability is the key to dice game strategy:
Single Die (6-sided)
| Outcome | Probability |
|---|---|
| Any specific number | 1/6 = 16.67% |
| Even number | 1/2 = 50% |
| Rolling a 1 or 5 | 2/6 = 33.33% |
Two Dice (Craps)
| Total | Combinations | Probability |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 1 | 2.78% |
| 3 | 2 | 5.56% |
| 4 | 3 | 8.33% |
| 5 | 4 | 11.11% |
| 6 | 5 | 13.89% |
| 7 | 6 | 16.67% |
| 8 | 5 | 13.89% |
| 9 | 4 | 11.11% |
| 10 | 3 | 8.33% |
| 11 | 2 | 5.56% |
| 12 | 1 | 2.78% |
7 is the most likely outcome with two dice — which is why it's central to Craps.

Dice Game Etiquette
- Roll on the table — Dice that fall off the table should be re-rolled
- Announce your roll — Especially important in Bunco and Craps
- Don't touch other players' dice — Wait for the active player to finish
- Shake thoroughly — Three shakes minimum is the universal standard
- Accept the roll — No "do-overs" unless dice land on an uneven surface
