When you receive your 13 cards, you need to evaluate them quickly and identify the best arrangement. Here are proven tricks to speed up your assessment.
The 10-Second Scan
Train yourself to perform this rapid assessment in order:
- Count pairs (2-5 seconds) - How many pairs do you have? This determines your basic hand structure.
- Identify suits (1-2 seconds) - Are there 5+ cards of any suit? Flush potential.
- Check for connectors (2-3 seconds) - Any sequences of 3+ consecutive ranks? Straight potential.
- Spot trips and quads (1-2 seconds) - Rare but game-changing when present.
