Hand Rankings (Low to High)
1. High Card / Points (Điểm / Bù)
The lowest category, based on point calculation.
Calculation: Sum of 3 cards modulo 10 (like Baccarat).
| Card | Value |
|---|---|
| A | 1 point |
| 2-9 | Face value |
| 10, J, Q, K | 0 points |
Examples:
- 5 + 8 + J = 13 → 3 Points
- 9 + 9 + 9 = 27 → 7 Points (Note: This is also Wax, see below)
- J + Q + K = 0 → 0 Points (Bù) - Lowest possible
Ranking by points: 9 > 8 > 7 > 6 > 5 > 4 > 3 > 2 > 1 > 0
2. Pictures / Fairies (Ảnh / Tiên)
Three face cards (J, Q, K in any combination).
Examples:
- J♠-Q♥-K♦ (mixed suits)
- J♠-J♥-Q♣ (two Js + Q)
- K♠-K♥-K♣ (three Kings)
Ranking within Pictures:
- Compare highest card (K > Q > J)
- If equal, compare second highest
- If still equal, compare suits (♠ > ♥ > ♦ > ♣)
Overall: Points < Pictures < Liêng < Wax
3. Liêng (Straight / Sảnh)
Three consecutive cards (e.g., 4-5-6).
Special rankings:
- A-2-3 is the lowest Liêng (Liêng nhỏ)
- Q-K-A is the highest Liêng (Liêng to)
- 2-3-4, 3-4-5, etc. ranked by highest card
Examples:
- A♠-2♥-3♦ → Liêng (lowest)
- 7♣-8♣-9♣ → Liêng (mid)
- Q♠-K♥-A♦ → Liêng (highest)
Note: Suits only matter for tie-breaking.
4. Wax (Sáp / Three of a Kind)
Three cards of the same rank. The strongest hand in Liêng.
Ranking:
- 2-2-2 is the lowest Wax
- A-A-A is the highest Wax
- Wax beats everything else
Examples:
- 2♠-2♥-2♦ → Wax (lowest)
- 7♠-7♥-7♦ → Wax (mid)
- A♠-A♥-A♦ → Wax (highest)

Gameplay Flow
Step 1: Ante (Góp Gà / Tẩy)
All players place an equal initial bet into the pot before cards are dealt.
Example with 5 players, $1 ante:
Pot = $1 × 5 = $5
Step 2: Deal
- Dealer shuffles and offers a cut.
- Deal 3 cards to each player, one at a time, clockwise.
- Players look at their own cards secretly.
- Keep cards hidden from other players.
Step 3: Betting Round
Starting with the player to dealer's left (or previous winner), players take turns counter-clockwise.
Available Actions:
| Action | Vietnamese | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Check | Xem | Pass if no one has bet yet |
| Bet | Tố | Place a bet into the pot |
| Call | Theo | Match the current highest bet |
| Raise | Tố thêm | Increase the current bet |
| Fold | Úp | Give up, lose any bets made |
| All-in | Tất tay | Bet everything you have |
Betting continues until:
- All players have matched the highest bet, OR
- All but one player have folded
Step 4: Showdown (Xổ Bài)
If 2+ players remain after betting:
- All remaining players reveal their hands.
- Compare hand rankings.
- Highest hand wins the entire pot.
If only 1 player remains:
- That player wins without revealing their hand.
- This is the power of bluffing!
Betting Structure
Fixed Limit (Có Giới Hạn)
- Bets can only be in predetermined amounts.
- Maximum 3-4 raises per round.
- More predictable, safer for beginners.
No Limit (Không Giới Hạn)
- Players can bet any amount at any time.
- All-in is always available.
- Higher risk, more exciting.
Pot Limit (Theo Pot)
- Maximum bet equals current pot size.
- Middle ground between fixed and no limit.

Strategy Tips
1. Bluffing (Cáy)
Liêng is all about psychology.
When to bluff:
- You have position (act last)
- Opponents show weakness (checking, hesitation)
- Pot is worth stealing
- Your table image is tight
How to bluff:
- Bet confidently
- Maintain consistent behavior
- Don't over-bluff (stay unpredictable)
2. Position Awareness
Acting last is advantageous:
- You see everyone's actions before deciding
- Can steal pots when everyone checks
- Better information = better decisions
3. Reading Opponents
Watch for tells:
- Hesitation before betting
- Quick calls vs. quick folds
- Physical reactions to cards
- Betting patterns
Online tells:
- Timing patterns
- Bet sizing habits
- Chat behavior
4. Bankroll Management
Critical rules:
- Never play with money you can't afford to lose
- Set a loss limit before starting
- Use the 5% rule (max 5% of bankroll per game)
- Quit while ahead
5. Knowing When to Fold
Fold early with:
- 0-2 Points (Bù to low points)
- No draw potential
- Facing big bets from tight players
- Poor position with marginal hand
Common Mistakes to Avoid
1. Calling Too Much
Mistake: Calling bets with weak hands hoping to get lucky. Solution: Fold early with poor hands. Save money for better opportunities.
2. Over-bluffing
Mistake: Bluffing too frequently, becoming predictable. Solution: Bluff selectively. Mix up your play.
3. Ignoring Position
Mistake: Playing the same way regardless of position. Solution: Play tighter from early position, looser from late position.
4. Emotional Play (Tilt)
Mistake: Making irrational decisions after losses. Solution: Take breaks. Don't chase losses.
5. Showing Cards
Mistake: Revealing your hand when not required. Solution: Keep opponents guessing. Never show unless necessary.
