History of Sam Loc: The Cyclone Card Game 🌪️
Origins
Sâm Lốc (often called simply Sâm) is a card game deeply rooted in Northern Vietnam. While it shares the "shedding" mechanic with Tien Len (Southern Progression), Sâm Lốc evolved with a distinct Northern character: faster, more aggressive, and higher risk.
Etymology
The name "Sâm" (Ginseng) is mysterious:
- Prize theory: Some speculate it might refer to an old prize (ginseng) awarded to winners
- Slang theory: Simply a colloquial term that stuck
- "Lốc" might refer to a "cyclone" or "gust," reflecting the game's lightning-fast speed where a player can dump their entire hand in one turn (Báo Sâm)
