This is the defining feature of the game. A player can "Báo Sâm" at the start of the game, asserting they can play all their cards without anyone being able to intercept them.
| Priority Type | How It Works |
|---|---|
| Previous winner | Gets first right to declare |
| Random selection | First game only |
| Speed-based | Whoever announces first |
| Position-based | Dealer gets priority |
If a player Declares Sam but is successfully blocked (someone plays a higher combination), the declarer must pay a heavy penalty to the blocker, and the game ends immediately.
| Scenario | Penalty |
|---|---|
| Declared & blocked | Pay entire table + blocker bonus |
| Declared & won | Win from entire table with bonus |
| Multiple blockers | Only first blocker gets bonus |
| Hand Strength | Báo Sâm Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Dragon straight | Strong yes |
| Multiple bombs | Yes |
| All high cards | Consider carefully |
| Mixed hand | No |
| Weak hand | Never |
Holding a 2 (Heo) when another player finishes the game results in a penalty.
| 2s Remaining | Penalty Multiplier |
|---|---|
| 1 two | 2x base penalty |
| 2 twos | 4x base penalty |
| 3 twos | 6x base penalty |
| 4 twos | 10x base penalty |
Unlike Tien Len, usually only Four of a Kind can chop a 2. Some variations allow strict bomb combinations.
| Chopping Hand | Can Chop |
|---|---|
| Four of a Kind | Yes (standard) |
| 4 consecutive pairs | Some regions |
| 5 consecutive pairs | Very rare |
When a player has only 1 card left, they must announce it (Báo 1). The player seated before them is obligated to play their strongest card to stop them.
| Situation | Obligation |
|---|---|
| Player has 1 card | Must announce |
| Previous player | Must block with strongest |
| Fails to block | "Đền Làng" penalty |
| Violation | Consequence |
|---|---|
| Didn't block with strongest | Pay all players |
| Played weak on purpose | Pay all players |
| Allowed easy win | Heavy penalty |

Before playing Sam Loc in a new group, always clarify:
| Rule | Questions to Ask |
|---|---|
| Báo Sâm priority | "Who gets priority to declare?" |
| Chopping rules | "What hands can chop a 2?" |
| Instant wins | "Which Tới Trắng hands count?" |
| Đền Làng | "How much is the village penalty?" |
| 2s penalty | "How much per remaining 2?" |
Sam Loc's variations reflect Vietnam's regional diversity. Always confirm house rules before playing in a new circle.
