Xi To Rules - Complete Guide 🎴
Overview
Xi To (also known as Xì Phé or Hong Kong Poker) is a popular poker variant in Vietnam, played with a stripped 32-card deck. Unlike Texas Hold'em, Xi To is a game of pure psychology and calculation where players receive cards one by one and bet after each round. It is considered one of the most skill-intensive card games in Vietnamese culture.

Gameplay Flow
Setup
Each player places a small initial bet (Ante) into the pot.
1. Dealing (Round 1)
- Each player is dealt 2 cards:
- 1 card Face Down (Hole card - only you can see)
- 1 card Face Up (Door card - everyone sees)
- The player with the highest face-up card starts the betting.
2. Betting Rounds (Rounds 2, 3, 4)
- Players receive 1 more face-up card in each round.
- A betting round follows each deal.
- This continues until each player has 5 cards total (1 down, 4 up).
3. Showdown
- After the final betting round (4th face-up card), remaining players reveal their Hole card.
- The best 5-card hand wins the pot.
- If hands are identical, the suit of the highest card determines the winner.
Betting Options
On your turn, you can:
- Check (Xem): Pass action to next player (if no one has bet).
- Call (Theo): Match the current highest bet.
- Raise (Tố): Increase the bet.
- Limit: Usually capped at the total amount currently in the pot.
- Fold (Úp): Discard your hand and forfeit the pot.
- All-In (Tố Tất): Bet all your chips (rare in limit games).
Strategy Tips
- Protect Your Hole Card: Your face-down card is your secret weapon. If you have an Ace in the hole, showing an Ace face-up makes your hand terrifying.
- Read the Board: Since 4 cards are exposed, calculate the odds. If an opponent shows a Pair of Kings, can you beat it?
- Positional Play: Acting last allows you to see how others bet before making your decision.
- Bluffing: Critical in Xi To. Represent strength even when weak, but be wary of "calling stations."
Probabilities and Hand Distribution
Xi To uses a 32-card deck (7 through A), which significantly changes probabilities compared to standard 52-card poker. Understanding these odds gives you a mathematical edge.
Hand Probability (5 Cards from 32-Card Deck)
| Hand | Combinations | Probability | Odds (1 in ...) |
|---|---|---|---|
| High Card | 1,310,720 | 50.1% | 2.0 |
| One Pair | 790,272 | 30.2% | 3.3 |
| Two Pair | 207,552 | 7.9% | 12.6 |
| Three of a Kind | 107,520 | 4.1% | 24.4 |
| Straight | 57,656 | 2.2% | 45.5 |
| Flush | 39,040 | 1.5% | 66.7 |
| Full House | 24,192 | 0.92% | 108.7 |
| Four of a Kind | 2,240 | 0.086% | 1,163 |
| Straight Flush | 776 | 0.030% | 3,329 |
Total possible 5-card hands from 32 cards: 201,376
Key Differences from 52-Card Poker
| Statistic | 32-Card Deck | 52-Card Deck |
|---|---|---|
| Probability of a Pair | 30.2% | 42.3% |
| Probability of Two Pair | 7.9% | 4.75% |
| Probability of a Straight | 2.2% | 0.39% |
| Probability of a Flush | 1.5% | 0.20% |
| Probability of Full House | 0.92% | 0.14% |
| Average hand strength | Higher | Lower |
Note: Because the deck is smaller and contains only high cards, strong hands are more common. A pair in Xi To is weaker relative to the average hand than in standard poker.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Overplaying Small Pairs: In Xi To's 32-card deck, pairs are more common than in standard poker. A pair of 8s looks attractive but is easily beaten by higher pairs that appear frequently. If opponents show face cards and bet aggressively, fold small pairs rather than committing more chips.
-
Ignoring the Stripped Deck Effect: Because Xi To uses only cards 7 through Ace, straights and flushes occur much more often than in 52-card poker. Treating a straight as a rare monster hand will lead to incorrect bets. Adjust your hand evaluation to account for the higher average hand strength.
-
Revealing Your Hole Card Strategy: Since 4 of your 5 cards are face-up, opponents can narrow down your possibilities. If your hole card completes a visible draw, betting patterns make it obvious. Vary your betting to disguise whether your hidden card improved your hand.
-
Calling Too Loosely Out of Position: Acting early with marginal hands in Xi To is costly because later players have more information from your visible cards. Play tight from early position and expand your range only when you have positional advantage.
-
Forgetting Suit Rankings Matter: Unlike Texas Hold'em where suits rarely matter, Xi To uses suits as tiebreakers (Spades > Hearts > Clubs > Diamonds). When hands are otherwise identical, the suit of your highest card determines the winner. Factor suit strength into your hand evaluation.
-
Not Reading Opponents' Exposed Cards: With 4 cards visible per player, you can calculate what combinations opponents might hold. Failing to scan the table for possible straights, flushes, and sets in opponents' hands means you miss critical information that should affect your betting.
-
Bluffing Against Calling Stations: Xi To attracts players who want to see every showdown. Bluffing against opponents who rarely fold is a losing strategy. Save your bluffs for observant, disciplined players who are capable of folding marginal hands.
