What is Contract Bridge?

Contract Bridge is a four-player trick-taking card game played in two partnerships (North-South vs East-West). Each deal has two phases: an auction (bidding) to determine the contract, and the play where the declaring side tries to fulfill their contract. It is widely considered the most intellectually demanding card game.

How many people can play Bridge?

Exactly four players in two partnerships. However, duplicate Bridge events can accommodate any number of tables, with movement systems ensuring fair comparison.

How long does it take to learn Bridge?

Basic rules can be learned in a few hours. Becoming competent takes a few months of regular play. True mastery takes years. Most players continue improving throughout their entire Bridge careers.

Bridge has a steep learning curve because it combines multiple skills: hand evaluation, bidding conventions, card play technique, partnership communication, and defensive strategy. However, the depth of the game is what makes it rewarding for a lifetime.

What are bidding conventions?

Conventions are artificial bids that carry specific meanings beyond just claiming you can win tricks. They allow partners to communicate hand information precisely. Common conventions include Stayman, Blackwood, Jacoby Transfers, and Negative Doubles.

Stayman is a convention used after partner opens 1NT. By responding 2 Clubs, you ask partner "Do you hold a 4-card major suit?" This helps the partnership find an 8-card major suit fit, which scores better than No Trump.

Blackwood (4NT) asks partner how many aces they hold. Responses: 5C = 0 or 4, 5D = 1, 5H = 2, 5S = 3. This helps avoid bidding slams when two aces are missing.

What is the difference between Standard American and 2/1 Game Force?

Standard American: A new suit response at the 2-level shows about 10 points. Opener can pass. 2/1 Game Force: A new suit response at the 2-level forces the auction to at least the game level. This allows more accurate slam bidding.

How many HCP do I need to open the bidding?

Typically 12+ HCP (High Card Points) for a standard opening bid. With fewer points, you may make a weak bid (preempt) with a long suit, or pass.

What does "vulnerable" mean?

Vulnerability is a scoring modifier. When vulnerable, you earn higher bonuses for making games and slams, but you also suffer higher penalties for going down. In rubber bridge, vulnerability is earned by being one game toward rubber. In duplicate, it follows a fixed rotation.

How is Bridge scored?

Each trick over 6 (the "book") earns points based on the trump suit: Clubs/Diamonds: 20 points per trick Hearts/Spades: 30 points per trick No Trump: 40 for the first trick, 30 for each subsequent trick Reaching 100+ trick points scores a "game" with a substantial bonus.

What is the difference between rubber and duplicate scoring?

Rubber Bridge: The first partnership to win 2 games wins the rubber. Bonus points for rubber victory. Duplicate Bridge: Each deal is scored independently. Pairs are ranked based on how many other pairs they outperform on the same deals. This eliminates the luck of the deal.
