Rules of Chan (Chắn)
Chan (also spelled Chắn) is a traditional Vietnamese card game derived from To Tom. It is a sophisticated draw-and-meld game played with 100 cards and 4 players, requiring strategic thinking, memory, and careful observation of opponents' discards. The goal is to form combinations and achieve Ù (winning hand) or have the lowest score.
1. The Cards
The deck consists of 100 cards divided into three suits plus special cards:
The Three Suits (Hàng)
| Suit | Name | Symbol | Cards |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vạn | Myriad | 万 | 2-9 (8 cards × 4 copies = 32 cards) |
| Sách | Bamboo | 索 | 2-9 (8 cards × 4 copies = 32 cards) |
| Văn | Coin | 文 | 2-9 (8 cards × 4 copies = 32 cards) |
Special Cards
- Chi Chi (四支): 4 copies - These are wild cards that can substitute for certain combinations
Each number from 2 to 9 has specific Vietnamese names:
- Nhị (2), Tam (3), Tứ (4), Ngũ (5), Lục (6), Thất (7), Bát (8), Cửu (9)
Card Reading Example
A card marked "Tam Vạn" means: the number 3 (Tam) in the Myriad suit (Vàn). There are 4 identical copies of this card in the deck.
2. Basic Setup
- Players: Exactly 4 players (traditionally played sitting in a square)
- Dealing: Each player receives 19 cards
- The Nọc: The remaining cards (24 cards) are placed face-down in the center as the draw pile
- Discard Pile: Cards discarded by players form a visible pile next to the Nọc
Dealing Procedure
- Shuffle the deck thoroughly
- One player (the dealer) distributes 19 cards to each player, one at a time
- Players arrange their cards privately (usually sorted by suit and number)
- The player to the dealer's right takes the first turn
3. Gameplay Loop
Chan focuses on pair-building rather than long sequence runs. Players aim to form two types of combinations:
Combination Types
| Type | Name | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chắn | Pair | Two identical cards (same suit AND same number) | Tam Vạn + Tam Vàn |
| Cạ | Cross-pair | Two cards with same number but DIFFERENT suits | Tam Vạn + Tam Sách |
Turn Structure
On your turn, you may perform ONE of these actions:
- Draw (Bốc): Take the top card from the Nọc (draw pile)
- Eat (Ăn): Take the card just discarded by the previous player to form a Chắn or Cạ
- Discard (Đánh): After drawing or eating, you must discard one card face-up
Important Rules
- You can only "Eat" if the discarded card immediately forms a valid Chắn or Cạ with cards in your hand
- If you draw a card that completes a Chắn or Cạ, you may immediately declare it
- The discard pile is visible to all players - use this information to track cards
- If the Nọc runs out before anyone wins, the game is a draw
4. Winning (Ù)
You win (called Ù, pronounced "oo") when your 19 cards plus one card (drawn or eaten) form a complete hand of:
- Minimum 6 Chắn (pairs of identical cards)
- The remaining cards form valid Cạ (cross-pairs)
- Zero unmatched "orphan" cards
Winning Declaration
When you believe you have a winning hand:
- Announce "Ù!" clearly
- Lay down all cards face-up
- Other players verify your combinations
- If valid, you win the calculated points (Cước)
5. Scoring (Cước)
Victory points are calculated based on the complexity and rarity of the winning hand. Higher Cước = more points/money won.
Basic Cước (1 Point)
| Name | Vietnamese | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Xuông | Ù Xuông | Basic win with no special combinations |
Special Cước (Higher Points)
| Name | Vietnamese | Points | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thiên Ù | Thiên Ù | 3 pts | Win immediately after dealing (dealer only) |
| Địa Ù | Địa Ù | 2 pts | Win on the very first draw from Nọc |
| Tôm | Tôm | 2 pts | Hand contains Tam Vàn, Tam Sách, Thất Văn |
| Lèo | Lèo | 2 pts | Hand contains Cửu Vàn, Bát Sách, Chi Chi |
| Bạch Thủ | Bạch Thủ | 2 pts | Win while waiting for ONE specific card to complete 6th Chắn |
| Bạch Thủ Chi | Bạch Thủ Chi | 3 pts | Bạch Thủ where the waiting card is Chi Chi |
Rare Cước (Maximum Points)
| Name | Vietnamese | Points | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thiên Hoa | Thiên Hoa | 6 pts | Dealer wins with perfect hand + flowers |
| Địa Hoa | Địa Hoa | 5 pts | First draw creates perfect hand + flowers |
| Hoa Rơi | Hoa Rơi | 4 pts | Win with 8+ Chắn (extremely rare) |
Stacking Rules
Some Cước can combine for higher total points:
- Example: Thiên Ù + Tôm = 3 + 2 = 5 points
- Local house rules may vary on stacking
6. Strategy Tips
For Beginners
- Sort your hand immediately - Organize by suit, then by number to see potential pairs
- Track discards - Watch what opponents discard to know what cards are "dead"
- Prioritize Chắn over Cạ - You need at least 6 Chắn to win
- Don't chase rare combinations - A simple Xuông win is better than waiting for Tôm
Intermediate Strategy
- Defensive discarding - Avoid discarding cards that might help the next player
- Memory training - Track which cards have been played to calculate odds
- Read opponents - Notice which suits they're collecting or avoiding
- Flexible hands - Keep multiple paths to completion rather than one rigid plan
Advanced Concepts
- Card counting - Know exactly how many copies of key cards remain
- Tempo management - Balance speed of completion vs. quality of Cước
- Table position - Your seat relative to the dealer affects strategy
- Psychological elements - Control your reactions when drawing key cards
7. Common Mistakes to Avoid
| Mistake | Why It's Bad | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Forgetting minimum Chắn | Can't win with only Cạ | Count pairs constantly |
| Ignoring discards | Miss valuable information | Watch every discard |
| Over-valuing rare Cước | Often leads to losing | Win first, style second |
| Poor card organization | Slow decision making | Develop sorting system |
| Tipping your hand | Opponents adjust strategy | Maintain neutral demeanor |
8. Terminology Quick Reference
| Vietnamese | English | Meaning |
