Dumping the Queen of Spades
The Queen of Spades is worth 13 points — half of all penalty points in a round. Getting rid of it safely is the most important tactical skill in Hearts.
The Early Dump
The safest time to dump the Queen is within the first 3-4 tricks, before the point standings become critical. Methods include:
- Spade lead dump: When another player leads spades and you cannot follow suit with a lower card, play the Queen. This only works if you are void in spades or the Queen is your lowest remaining spade.
- Void suit dump: If you voided a suit through passing, play the Queen when that suit is led. This is the cleanest dump method.
- Leading the Queen directly: If you have enough high spades to guarantee winning the trick AND a plan for handling the 13 points, lead the Queen yourself. This is risky and only recommended when attempting a moon shot.
